The Creative Curriculum
The curriculum we use at Hola Knoxville Bilingual Academy is based on The Creative Curriculum, a curriculum approved by the Tennessee Department of Education and U.S Department of Health and Human Services. The Creative Curriculum provides a nurturing, educational, and developmentally-appropriate framework for our in-home child care and gives us an opportunity to provide exceptional bilingual preschool preparation.
The philosophy of The Creative Curriculum is that children should be allowed to grow at their own pace and to learn in ways that help them become confident in themselves as learners. The curriculum has two goals:
· To help children learn about themselves and the world around them; and
· To encourage children to feel good about themselves and capable as learners.
Specific goals are identified for each area of development:
Social: to feel secure and comfortable, trust their environment, make friends, and feel part of the group.
Emotional: to experience pride and self-confidence, develop independence and self-control, and have a positive attitude toward life.
Cognitive: to become confident learners by trying out their own ideas and experiencing success and by acquiring thinking skills such as the ability to solve problems, ask questions, and use words to describe their ideas, observations, and feelings.
Physical: to increase their large and small muscle control and feel confident about what their bodies can do.
Language: Children learn how to communicate with others, listen and participate in conversations, and recognize various forms of prints. Children begin to recognize letters and words and begin writing for a purpose. Children develop language in both English and Spanish.
The Creative Curriculum is an excellent way to help children succeed and to teach them to be creative, confident thinkers. That means offering them opportunities for hands-on exploring and discovery that build lifelong critical thinking skills and foster confidence.
